Gold Beads Oxidize? Empty Gold Beads Oxidize?

Post by Bugladydi Thu Jun 30, 2011 7:45 pm

I read on a thread here in a post by Admin that gold beads will oxidize when on a silver chain. Does anyone know a way to clean the gold beads or should I be avoiding placing my gold beads on a silver chain? I have a gold chain but I don't wear it all of the time. Any thoughts?

This should never happen. Silver will not effect the gold. Best thing to do is get a good polishing cloth and use it on the gold. It will bring it up and shiny. If you are in the US and need one PM me and I will send you one.

I thought that the thing that attracted mankind to gold was that it did not tarnish?

Gold in its pure form does not tarnish. This is 18KT gold, which means it is 75% gold and 25% other metals. Depending on what is used as the other metals it can be effected. It should not tarnish though. What you need to be careful of is chemical attacks on it like chlorine in a pool. What happens is the chlorine molecule likes to attach to the gold molecule and deterioration will occur.

So don't swim with you jewelry on or use cleaning agents. Otherwise it will last for years.

Well the gold doesn't tarnish but the tarnish from the silver does come off on the gold making it appear a rusty color. It is hard to clean off, I take my gold beads to a jewellery shop to have cleaned.

The only way around it is to have all gold, but I love the mix of gold & silver so I put up with it.

My gold beads always turn silvery grey on the edge near the bracelet. I just polish them every now and then with a gold cleaning cloth from the jeweller's.
