X splitter

I have wanted a splitter since I got my FN--but I seem to always spend money on other beads. This morning, I was again wishing I had one to shorten my necklace, when it occurred to me that I might be able to use an X link. It seems to work with the links that have parallel horizontal openings.
The one I wore today:
Another experiment--didn't work as well as the rooster--since his face is pointed down a little:
Anyone use any other beads as splitters....Really don't want to spend a lot on one.
