Happy Winter Solstice

From today on, the daylight journey of the sun-chariot in the northern hemisphere will become longer and longer every day! Wishing you a great winter-solstice and a very Merry Christmas!



Here's a somewhat lengthy description of the design behind today's bracelet !

The Sun Chariot of Trundholm is a late Bronze Age artefact, which was discovered in 1902 in the Trundholm moor near Nykøbing Sjælland, Denmark, where we spent a wonderful week in November and I was deeply impressed by the copy of the chariot in the local museum (the original is on display in Copenhagen).
The Sun Chariot illustrates the idea that the sun was drawn on it's eternal journey by a divine horse. A sun image and the horse have been placed on wheels to symbolize the motion of the sun.

Sunrise
The fish pulls the rising sun up from the night-ship to the morning-ship.

Early Morning
For a while the fish is allowed to sail on with the morning-ship as it starts it journey across the sky.

Mid morning
The fish is to be devoured by a bird of prey while the sun-horse picks up the task of carrying the sun across the sky aboard a chariot.

Late Morning
The sun-horse prepares to take the sun from the morning-ship.

Noon
The sun-horse carries the sun on its onward journey across the sky aboard a chariot.

Early afternoon
The sun-horse and chariot land on the sun-ship.

Mid afternoon
The sun is taken over by the snake who protects it on the sun-ship.

Late afternoon
The snake conceals the sun in its spiral curls so that it can lead the sun down below the horizon.

Sunset
The night ship arrives to carry the sun into the underworld. The sun is no longer visible as it starts its journey through the underworld.

Midnight
The fish swims with the night ship in order to accompany it to the eastern horizon in readiness for sunrise.
