I just had to see what a Maori gherkin was. Never heard of such a thing! However gherkin in maori is kamoriki.
What are those things anyway, they look like a seed pod or large flower bud??
I love the dark toffee coloured glass beads

The gherkins look so very interesting, now I need to know more about them
Do you have their botanical name? How do they taste?
They make a lovely bead display for your stunning bracelet.

Re: ..you know "maori-gherkins"?..
thank's for your lovely words!.. it makes me happy!
it's hart to explane this in english, what exactly it is ..(my bad english is not enough :-(..)
i have get little tiny things...look like wood-pieces..from my neighbour..,
who i put into a little bit of earth..and then they grow about two meters in high..
it's not a normal taste of gherkins (is this the right name for "gurken"?..hope so)..
they smells very good, when they are small ones..
hugs to all

I wonder if the maori ghurkins name is just something your neighbour called them, i cannot find any mention of them on google.
Planting them from a woody root makes me wonder if they are a kind of taro? But you eat the root of those

Aha! I think i found them, they are tindori which is an indian vegetable. They look a bit like cucumbers inside. I've never seen them here in nz, but now i am curious to find some to try and grow

Tindori or tindora, ivy gourd or the latin, Coccinia grandis
In colder climates they lift the roots to plant out in spring because they are frost tender. Young fruits eaten because older ones become more bitter, they turn a red colour. Does this sound like yours?

Re: ..you know "maori-gherkins"?..
The more common translation for 'Gurke' is usually 'cucumber', a gherkin is the pickled variety I think...
I've never heard the name 'Maori-Gurke' before, Clochard, is it this one?
I know it as 'Tindola'
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccinia_grandis
Oh and of course love your beads, especially the eye bead!!!
