"Ex-slums" are way more appealing and characterful than modern developments (haven't been for over a decade but my friend lived there for a while and I liked it). Bet some of those almshouses are listed now

I'm glad they're still there and weren't demolished, they're wonderful! I'd qualify for one of the "poor maiden" houses nowadays ~ love the no hanging out your washing on a Sunday rule

Perfect description! There's something medieval about the colors too. Love the backgrounds of your pics. That was an interesting link about the almshouses. I can't see the public housing in the U.S. being rehabbed like that, dreary cinderblock towers or squat blocks.
