mermaidspurse wrote:Still confused why they call this creature "Phoenix"? As son as the collection is officially 'out', I will ask on TB's official facebook wall, but probably it's the artist's free intepretation!

From wikipedia: "a mythical sacred firebird that can be found in the mythologies of the Arabian, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, Indian and (according to Sanchuniathon) Phoenicians."

There are many ancient representations of this bird for an artist to choose from. This picture from wiki actually looks very much like the new Phoenix silver.

And a Chinese Phoenix statue, which looks more peacock like to me.

... And a 4 legged Griffin, which would indeed look like the new Phoenix if one were counting legs....

It's probably like the Porcupine/Hedgehog thing, it's a Hedgehog over there, renamed Porcupine (when it is obviously not) over here.

When I got mine, it was $175 US and so there is not much of a difference between the price of the silver core and the gold core. Mine was gold core, of course...about 3 years ago.

I got to see a few of these at my LD today. I really liked the Phoenix and the circle of hearts (I'm not sure what its name is). The teacups were nice, but the bundt cake was odd.

You have to remember that rubies are one of the most expensive gemstones next to emeralds and diamonds.

I managed to get a gold cored ruby a few months ago, and it is the star of my collection. The stones are beautiful.

Gem quality would mean that they were free of occlusions and transparent or clear. Something like that!

right. they could do emeralds too. Only a small fraction of either stones are really valuable and used in fine jewelry...

The gem quality ones are clear, not occluded like TB rubies. It would be prohibitively expensive to get clear rubies that size to core. I actually quite like the organic look of the opaque rubies and if they are rich, blood-red then they would be quite lovely and desirable. The few that I've been able to see in stores (maybe they were the ones that got left behind) were more on the dull purpley side and had dark spots. Not sure why they didn't use garnets which are more plentiful instead.

I don't know why they are charging so much for the silver cored rubies. It's highway robbery.

Whenever I see the bundt pan bead, I think of the scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding when the groom's mother brings a bundt cake to a party and is trying to tell the bride's aunt what it is.

Maria: What is it?
Harriet Miller: It's a bundt.
Maria: A bun?
Harriet: A bundT.
Maria: A Bondt?
Harriet: BUNDT BUUNDT!!

I was hoping it would be the same price as Black Onyx and the other faceted stones, too...

.... but who would wear a ruby like this in a ring. Surely these are low grade stones of the type that would be rejected for use in serious jewellery? The one at my LD is mucky brownish pink coloured and I might not have guessed it was a ruby if I didn't know. I would have thought it was a semi precious stone.

I broke down and ordered the Flying Geese Escher bead. I've always loved Escher and I really like the shape of that bead.
